Bottled Water Has a Packaging Problem

Every minute, a million PET bottles are sold worldwide. Most outlive the people who drink from them.

We started Not A PET Bottle to rethink how packaged water is delivered.

Our focus is simple:

Water matters.

The bottle matters too.

NPB explores PLA-based water packaging as an alternative to conventional PET — using a plant-based polymer approach rather than virgin PET.

No need to pretend that every alternative is plastic-free.

No need to call something sustainable without explaining what it actually is.

Just a different approach to the bottle.

What Is NPB-PLA™?

NPB-PLA™ is our bottle material platform based on PLA — polylactic acid.

PLA is a polymer that can be produced using plant-based feedstocks.

This gives us a different starting point from conventional PET.

But the distinction matters:

PLA is an alternative to PET. It is not the same thing as being plastic-free.

We believe environmental communication should be specific about what a material actually is.

From Conventional PET to a Different Material Choice

The real question is:

Can another material provide the required bottle performance while changing the material and lifecycle characteristics of the packaging?

That's the question behind NPB-PLA™.

PET became the standard for bottled water because it works.

It is lightweight, clear, strong and efficient to manufacture.

Replacing it therefore requires more than saying another material is “greener.”

A Bottle Designed With Its End in Mind

Packaging doesn’t end when the water is consumed.

The material has an entire journey:

Feedstock → Material → Bottle → Filling → Transport → Use → Collection → End of Life

That’s why we look beyond the bottle sitting on the shelf.

We look at:

  • What the material is made from
  • Where its feedstock comes from
  • How the bottle performs
  • What happens after use
  • What infrastructure is required
  • What environmental claims can actually be supported

Why Not A PET Bottle?

The name is the point.

Not A PET Bottle doesn’t mean every alternative is plastic-free.

It means we are questioning whether conventional PET should always be the default material for bottled water.

That opens the conversation to:

PLA

Plant-based polymers

Recycled materials

Reusable systems

Glass

Aluminium

and other packaging approaches.

Different materials solve different problems.

The goal is not to find one material that replaces everything.

The goal is to make the material choice more deliberate.

The Bottle Is Only the Beginning

We started with water. Then we questioned the bottle.

Now we're questioning the assumptions around bottled-water packaging itself.
